Topic-1: Big 6

Salaaaaaaaam

The first topic in Information Literacy (IL) was very knowledgeable. Our lecturer started the lesson by given us a small activity. The purpose of that activity was to see our knowledge in how to find the information.  At that time the students gave their experiences on how they usually find the information. After that, our lecturer gave us a definition about information literacy. Firstly, she said that literacy is ways of thinking that is competency, knowledge, and skills. Therefore, she said that Information literacy is set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information. IL can also be called information management, information skills, information competency, knowledge management, and problem-based learning. Then, she explained six elements of IL which are library literacy, computer literacy, research literacy, internet literacy, media literacy, and critical thinking literacy.

Secondly, she explained that IL is very important to make fast decisions. It is also a good solution to data smog and it helps people to analyze and evaluate the information. It also gives people confidence to in using the information to make solution or create product.  However, there are many models of IL such as Big 6, Mc Kenzie research cycle, Albertat model, Seven Pillars model, Pitts Research cycle, and Action Learning model. Then, she said that our university uses big 6 to make decisions.

Big 6 is six stages to help anyone solve problems or make decisions by using information. The first stage is called definition task which means define the problem and identify information requirements. The second stage is information seeking behavior which can be achieves by determines range sources and prioritize the sources. The third stage is location and access which achieved by locate the relevant sources and select the appropriate, understandable, and current information. The fourth stage is use of information that can be achieved by view, read, heard, touch, and then extract information. The fifth stage is synthesis which means organize the information and present them. The sixth stage is evaluation by judge the product and the process.

Finally, our lecturer explained some steps to do any research. The first step is to choose a broad topic and the narrow down the topic by using specific area, specific location, specific time, and people or audience. The second step is to develop statement and formulate questions. The problem statement will help to define the research problem, identify it, and make it clear. It will also help to choose the research problem and state it properly.

Thanks
